Why do women have so many purses?

As an example, I'm going to put my girlfriend in focus ...
She has a purse to go to college (or in this case, a bag), a purse to go out at night, a purse to travel, a purse to go to the beach, a purse to go to the gym and so many others. Oh, God! 
So, one day, I decided to ask her why so many bags and she simply replied: "Baby, it's a girl's thing."
P.S.: I'm not generalizing the situation. My mother, for example, only has 2 purses.

I just got another one 
. But don't think I make a habit of buying them! Different purses have different practical value - that's why I have several. If I go to an event - I do try to make it match or be appropriate for what I'm wearing. But otherwise, I really don't buy up too many purses. I do have a friend though who loves to buy lots of purses and big ones at that.

You and my wife would get on well together. She also tries to match things up, usually by colour

@ThreeTeddies I usually carry a black or brown purse that will go with everything. I only do the true matching thing if we're going to a wedding or fancy party.

@much2say My wife won't step out the door unless everything she is wearing is matched and appropriate for the occasion - even if it's only for a coffee!

I also have different bags that I use. Some are for the office, others can be for casuals. For parties, I also have a party bag as well as a travelling bag when I will be on travel.
I think girls are just used to having bags according to the place or occasions they will be attending or going.

It is definitely not a girl thing. Maybe a girlie girl thing.
I have two purses. One that I have used as a travel bag for my bodywash, lotion, deodorant and toothrbush.
I don't use purses. I have a wallet case for my cellphone and use it.

@WiseGhots One of my best friends used to carry a wallet and that was it. She carries a purse more times than I do.

I believe some women have a purse for each outfit and one for night time and one for the beach. I have knapsacks and some over the shoulder bags but now I use one and another one.

I agree that too many is a bit too much. I have a small one that works for me that I use. I used to used the fanny packs but in winter it is very hard to open a coat or jacket to get at things.

My wife has one. She doesnt like having many pieces of this or of that because she tends to use only one and that makes her stuff peel off. She used to have so many bags but ended up using only two. So many pairs of shoes, but only used two. So when we got married. She just decided to use two pairs or a pair of this or of that.

I adore purses and totes. I've tried to cut back, though. A few years ago, I donated about 11 to our church yard sale and still had several left!

Honestly I don't know, I have one and will never get rid of it as it's dear to me. But I only carry my wallet with me.
