What is love

Many years ago I was sat with the lad I thought I was truly madly in love with. That went wrong.
Anyway we got to discussing what is love how do we know it is that butterfly feeling deep inside off us how do we know it used when we quiver and shake at the sight of them.
Is that called love is it not just excitement.
Why does love hurt so much when it is broken surely love shouldn't make you feel that way.

I saw this discussion late last night but I didn't want to answer off the cuff. I wanted to think about this question for a while.
What is love? Of course there are many different loves. What is love between a man and a woman?
I think this is the definition I would go with.
Love is when one person cares more for the other person than they do for themselves. They would never intentionally want to hurt the person they love. Even if they broke up because of some reason, they would not be happy if things when wrong with them or be sad if things went well for them.
They want the other person to be happy even if they can't be together. They want the best for the other person. They want the other person to be happy! Love is not selfish! Love is self-sacrificing!

It is hard to describe what true love is but I know for me it meant meeting my soul mate and we had 20+ wonderful years together and that alone says, love. Now that he has passed on I know that I will have the memories but I will be alone for the rest of my days until we can meet again.

I don't think love will fail us ever but people will.. love is something which should be felt and valued equally on both sides.. when one person is suffering and the other is enjoying with someone else I don't think there was any true love existed.. it is merely that they used us for time being..
