Where do I start? I have to be honest with you I work in the Road Safety Industry so I may be a little biased, but also have experience of the need for seat belts. My experience, I was travelling at approximately 50mph (80kph) when a car pulled across in front of me so close that I barely managed to get my foot on the brake pedal. My impact speed approx 45mph. Seat belt saved me from spearing myself on the steering wheel, headbutting the windscreen etc etc. Yes it hurt my chest, but a little bruising was far better than punctured lungs, ruptured spleen, shattered pelvis, fractured skull, broken kneck - need I go on. My brother was involved in a head on collision, estimated impact speed approx 100mph. He was wearing a seat belt and walked away from it with bruising and a slight cut to his forehead. In the UK, the year that the wearing of seat belts in the front seats of cars was made compulsory, the number of fatal accidents dropped from about 6,500 per yer to 4,000 per year, so that tells us that about 2,500 lives per year have been saved since then. I think its worth it.

I dont use it. But for my kids, I use it all the time. Wearing one is so much safer I know. But I feel congested when wearing it.

I used to write for a daily newspaper and covered car accidents as part of my beat. Every single fatal accident I covered involved someone not wearing a seat belt. The one that sticks in my mind the most was a driver who went off the road in a snow storm and struck a tree. He was launched from the car, through the windshield. And, on the way out, his arm got caught in the steering wheel and ripped off at the shoulder. It was still in the car when I got there to take photos.

I never used to care for them but then I had two kids and I figured well if I have to teach them to wear them I better be wearing them myself. Now it is just second nature to put them on when I get in the car. The way I look at it is they are there for a reason and it can only help to wear them.

I was around during the time before wearing seatbelts became law. We never thought about it not being safe. The cars back then were much larger and heavier than the cars of today, and there weren't nearly as many cars on the road as there are now to crash into each other. I can remember my baby brother sitting in a rinky-dink baby seat that hung on the front seat. There were no straps to hold him in, just a little pretend steering wheel so that he could drive the car. Growing up I never knew a single person who was ever in a bad car accident. Now we have to take the extra precautions. Seatbelts and child safety seats are wonderful inventions!
