It's alternative day as I count down my favorite songs with "Town," "City," "State," and "Country" in the title. This is the "State" portion of today's discussion, and we are at #2: "State of the Nation" by New Order. I'm going to say this exactly once. Born from the ashes of the legendary Joy Division, New Order is one of the all-time great 80's alternative bands. Thank you, Goodnight! Oh. "State of the Nation." Right. Although they made some fantastic albums, New Order is a huge singles band, having released 43 of them since forming in 1980 (their 1983 hit, "Blue Monday," is the biggest selling twelve inch single of all time.) "State of the Nation" was a 1986 single from the band, a diatribe about the state of society in general. Most readily available on the group's 1987 singles compilation, Substance, the tune did alright for itself, reaching #1 on the UK Indie Singles chart (and #30 on the UK Singles chart,) #4 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart (and #18 on that magazine's Hot Dance Singles Sales chart,) and #17 in New Zealand. It's probably best known for being the first New Order single to use the title in the lyrics (in the chorus, no less!) That, and it was really fun to dance to! (Info verified by Wikipedia)
