Favorite "Country" Songs #2 - "Country Death Song"

Time now for a short trip to Hell. I am counting down my favorite songs with "Town," "City," "State," and "Country" in the title, and we wrap up today's discussion with the "Country" portion. We are at #2: "Country Death Song" by the Violent Femmes. Milwaukee's Violent Femmes, classified as "folk punk" by Wikipedia, are, simply put, one of those alternative rock bands that pretty much get cranked the hell up whenever they come on the radio, because despite vocalist Gordon Gano's usually dark, angst-ridden lyrics ("Blister in the Sun" is widely considered to be about heroin addiction, "Add it Up" is sung from the point of view of a poor fellow who cannot get laid, let alone kissed,) their songs are generally a hell of a lot of fun. "Country Death Song," however, is really not all that fun. The lead track to their 1984 album, Hallowed Ground, it is a first-person ditty about a fellow who lures his youngest daughter to a cave to kill her, then heads off to hang himself in shame. Musically, it's a great, old-school country/bluegrass murder ballad, what @FourWalls would probably tell you falls under the "Americana" genre (the best way to distance that musical style from what passes for country music these days.) No, "Country Death Song" is nowhere near as fun as say, "Gone Daddy Gone." But damn is it a great tune! (Info verified by Wikipedia)
