It's girls' day out here in the countdown of cover songs. I used a famous female cover in the "songs you probably knew were covers" side, and for today's look at a song you might not know was a cover, I'm going with another pair of famous ladies. Here's today's song. #5: Break It to Me Gently Ah, Juice Newton. One of those "Urban Cowboy"-era country singers that you couldn't really differentiate between the pop singers. A number of her songs were hits on both the country and pop charts, with seven of her songs being top 40 pop hits. "Break It to Me Gently" was one of them, peaking at #11 in 1982. Of course, that's not where the song starts. Let's go back a little in time...to, say, when I was a baby! And speaking of "little," it was Little Miss Dynamite herself, Brenda Lee, who originally recorded "Break It to Me Gently" in 1961. For someone who's now relegated to "I'm Sorry" and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," Brenda Lee had a good career...also as a crossover artist. (She is in both the Country and Rock Halls of Fame.) In 1961 her original version of "Break It to Me Gently" was a top 5 pop hit. Funny how we forget things like that. Break It to Me Gently Written by Joe Seneca and Diane Lampert Originally recorded by Brenda Lee, 1961 Famously covered by Juice Newton, 1982 Take it graduallly:
This song by "Brenda Lee" was released in 1961

I am ignorant of the Juice Newton version. Not on my 80s radar.

@amadeo — I think she’s in her mid-70s. She started young. EDIT: looked it up, she’s 74.

I must be old. I thought of Brenda Lee when I read the song title. Loved her music.
