They were not actual rivals and the rivalry was rather in their way of thinking. While Iago was willing to take risks, Abu wanted to play safe. They were often seen making fun of each other. Both being well wishers of Aladdin, wanted to help him and somehow agreed on the same plan to do so. I liked when Iago used to get mad at Abu about something and Abu simply laughed it out as if he doesn’t care.
