Favorite "Country" Songs #1 - "My Country"

"To no man will we sell, or deny, or delay right or justice." I am counting down my favorite songs with "Town," "City," "State," and "Country" in the title. That little quote from the Magna Carta plays heavily here in the "Country" portion of today's discussion. We are at #1: "My Country" by New Model Army. I'm fairly certain that this is the first time that a band has hit #1 on the same day in any of my countdowns, but it was bound to happen. I have used "My Country" before, and I'm likely to use it again. New Model Army vocalist/guitarist Justin Sullivan is a proud Englishman, and "My Country" is one of the greatest patriotic songs I've ever heard. And although the tune was written purely from a British point of view, these lyrics are easily adaptable to fit my American beliefs. "My Country" is not so much an anti-war song as it is a blast against a certain segment of society in general, a commentary on those who divide us rich against poor, white against black, who abuse our common laws, etc. Sullivan also goes on to rail against those that take rights and freedoms for granted, pointing out that those very rights were not given by the grace of God, or some United Nations clause, and definitely not by "some nice guy at the top." No, Sullivan nails it when he mentions that rights were earned by "all the tears and all the blood of all our grandmothers, grandfathers before." Not a single, not a hit, but damn, what a great song, with a message that definitely needs to be heard. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

It's funny, after reading you title I was thinking of a "Country Song." This is definitely not that. I should have known better. Great song and great message, for sure.
