An Atheistic Bible Study Of The Gospel Parable Of Drawing In The Net.

Matthew 13:47–52 (no references in the other canonical Gospels). Jesus starts another parable with ‘The Kingdom Of Heaven is like….’, and this time he compares it to a good haul of fish caught in trawling dragnets. He describes how the fishermen separate the good, sell-able and edible fish from the bad ones, which are destroyed and thrown back into the sea. The obvious direction of this is Judgement Day where the dead are separated into good Christian folk who are welcomed into Heaven and the bad people, unbelievers, unrepentant sinners, and atheists like me, who are cast into Hell. Today of course, fishermen don’t just dispose of the bad fish willy-nilly. Most are thrown back alive, and some young fish have to be cast back to help fish-stocks replenish. The parable sees death and Judgement as final. The problem is that fish don’t volunteer to get caught in a big net. Given a choice they would be happier continuing to swim around for longer. The net takes in the unbelievers without our consent. Young people, even infants, still have much opportunity to convert so killing them young robs them of the opportunity.
