Island 'Vido' - Is a small Island (less than kilometer in diameter) is located in the group of Ionian islands near of Corfu city port. During the First World War, the Corfu island served as a island hospital and quarantine for the sick Serbian soldiers.
Due to small area of the island and it’s rocky soil it soon became a necessity to bury the dead in the sea. More than 5000 people were buried at sea. The water around Vido island are known by the Serbian people as the ''Ode to a Blue Sea Tomb'' poem, written by Milutin Bojic.
****
''...There at the bottom, where seashells fall into the tired grip of sleep
And peat falls upon the dead algae,
Lay graves of the brave, lay brother to brother
Prometheuses of Hope, Apostles of Pain...''

@amadeo In general, the soldiers never get enough the respect they really deserve, that's why I wrote this

@DianneN The western coast of Greece is long, this is a very small island going off Corfu Island (less than kilometer in diameter) and it's not on the map

@DianneN
And mostly known only to Serbs and Greeks (because the Serbs defended the Greeks in the war) Of course, tourists from around the world know about this island too (who visited the Greek island of Corfu) but rarely anyone else is interested in it...understandable for me.
To us, the Serbs and the Greeks is historically important

@nela13 Buried, in terms of descent into the sea.
It is nice, but it has sad history, which few people know...In general, very little is written about the First World War and there is very little literature about it. I've managed to get only 2 books

@nela13 Well, it should not be a problem for my country to have a little more facts about the war in which my country participated (I'm talking about the First World War) for World War II has a lot more of literature.

I will have to go searching for more info to read, to understand why Serbian soldiers went that far to Corfu Greece. (I am hopeless re: georgraphy & history.) Sounds sad to die that far from one's homeland. (But many soldiers during the first and second WW had no choice over this matter, right?)

@YrNemo
1.232 names of Serbian soldiers only in the mausoleum, on each side of the mausoleum there is a monuments with the names of other soldiers (We found him in a mausoleum, 650 Dragutin Milosevic Rujiste)
You're right, I hope his spirit was free
Thank you!
Thank you!
