Are beauty pageants objectifying women?

Well, I think they do lead to objectification because they are being judged on the physical appearance, their body majorly. Though I believe there is some sort of intelligence also involved but that is secondary. In a society where we are demanding equality, is it justified to objectify women....??? Is it okay to enjoy these platforms or even to be a part of these....???

Never been a big fan of them. I don't know why you should fulfill a certain criterion of height, weight etc to be there. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. I am 5feet 8 inches tall and all my life I had people saying me that I am too tall for a regular girl, I should try for beauty pageant and all the crap!! That is ridiculous.

@Aansh13 It is unfair. Beauty can not be restricted to physical beauty.

@arunima25 Exactly.... That's what I am saying.... It's been scaled on physical appearance.... And I don't get that... I feel that it's unfair...

I don't really care about beauty pageants but if there's one thing I noticed, major beauty pageants now a days have self-fulfilled women with advocacies. So I guess, pageants in a way has evolved to show their relevance in society. That they are more than just about appearances. But then again, am not a fan of pageants.

Yeah... @pitsipeahie I would agree on that, they have evolved. But still I somehow feels that the criterion is still majorly on physical appearances....

I come from a country that beauty pageants are a big deal. People most times take it seriously when it comes to watching Miss Venezuela, and also Miss Universe. In my opinion it is just another contest where women have to accomplish certain characteristics, abilities, and of course beauty to be able to compete. In fact most of these women have to get out of their comfort zone and at least try to learn English to stand out! Some people claim that these kinds of contest are useless but I think it is a good representation of how strong, and versatil a woman can be.
