Seeing as I am still in the mode of sports movies that are really more about dysfunctional relationships, I bring you my review of 2017's "I,Tonya", dealing with the 1994 scandal between Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding preceding the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.
I am a fan of figure skating, and I was 12 in 1994 so I actually do remember the real event. Incase you are fuzzy about it - US. Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was assaulted by being smashed in the knee prior to the Olympics. What came to light rather quickly was that either fellow Olympic skater, Tonya Harding or someone in her camp - was behind the assault.
This movie deals with Tonya's story.
Tonya's poor background and demanding and often times abusive mother shaped her young life. Falling in love young , we are left to believe that perhaps Tonya can escape by marrying Jeff Gillooly, but quickly we see that her marriage dissolves into the same abusive patterns that her childhood did. Beatings and being chased around with loaded weapons scatter through Tonya's troubled marriage.
Things were also not easy for Tonya on the ice. In spite of having skated since she was 4 and being wildly talented - the ice skating judges didn't appreciate Tonya's style or life, much preferring the more cultured skaters who came from peaceful families. (In my opinion they should judge performance and not the person... but....)
Interestingly enough this movie is shot with the actors frequently breaking the 4th wall - where the actor looks into the camera and addresses the audience directly.
After particularly violent scenes the actors portraying either Tonya, or Jeff will come on - and say into the camera things like "according to me, that never happened" - so that each side of the story is told.
If we believe the message of the movie - the attack on Kerrigan was thought up by Gillooly and a friend - and pinned on Tonya. If that is true - we may never know...
This was an enjoyable movie - with plenty of skating, but again, like "Foxcatcher" deals with troubled relationships as much as it deals with the sport itself.
Margot Robbie is excellent as Tonya and hard to believe she will be playing a much different role as Barbie coming up shortly.

I think I may be the only figure skater who has not yet seen this movie
. I know Margot Robbie trained a bit at the rink I used to go to . . . if I saw the movie I just know I would nit pick at any actual skating
. We'll never know what really happened . . . but it has been sad seeing Tonya throughout the years paying for that incident. She really was talented.

@FayeHazel I hadn't looked up who coached her though. Skaters who know the technical side can tell if the person truly knows how to skate (at the level they are supposed to be portraying) . . . we look for these little things in these movies (there used to be a whole list online of movies that included skating).
Yep - she's remembered more for the negative things in her life rather than her accomplishments. Those who are in the know do remember that 3 Axel though and are still fans regardless of what happened in her outside life.

@much2say That makes sense. Even I can tell that they weren't really skating,/ or weren't really skating much in "Blades of Glory" (cheesy, but... yeah)
I'm happy there is still a camp that appreciates Tonya's skill.

Wow that's cool that you know the rink where she trained. I wonder what you would see in the skating... I know they used computer magic for the complex sequences...
So true. The movie did mention Tonya's athletic prowess - it is a pity that she isn't remember for that 3 Axel as well as the incident

I think backgrounds should not be judged, people do change over the years to become more than anyone ever thought they would be.

I agree. Some of those things (abusive mom, dad leaving) were not her fault, anyway. If anything should have been a bonus that she lived through that sort of childhood

The skating is pretty cool, though they did use computer magic for the more difficult sequences in there

@FayeHazel Lol! I can imagine. It takes years and years to become a good skater.

@DianneN Ah I wondered as much. I got a pair of figure skates as a pre teen. I wanted so badly to skate well. I never made it beyond a slow figure 8. I wonder if one needs to start younger.

@just4him So true, I think that is why they chose to film it unusually - with the actors addressing the camera... made that more possible

Sometimes it was kind of hard to watch, but I was impressed they handled things with a bit of humor and got in everyone's side of the story

So true. Mental health is a real health issue - so many seem to not think so. I hope you get to see it. I really enjoyed it

It was fascinating as it unfolded. Emergence of Oksana Bauil that year, too
