She was so sad

As some of you know, my husband works overnight during the week. So, when he works, he leaves after dinner and before my kids go to bed. As he takes a bus, he prefers to leave a little earlier, stop at his mom's, and just make his journey a bit easier. He's had this job for a little over two years, so my kids know what to expect. We're all used to it. Last night though, when it was bed time, my second just started to cry and ask for daddy. I snuggled with her in our bed, trying to comfort her. She just kept on crying, saying she wanted daddy and that she missed him. We made a quick call to daddy, who thankfully wasn't at work yet, but at his mom's. She really missed him last night. She cried for a while. It made me sad to see her so sad. I almost cried myself, just because I don't like seeing her so sad. Thankfully, after a while, she did start feeling a bit better. Got her to focus on other things and such. But it still makes me sad, when they're sad.

I wonder what started the whole thing. Did you ask her what triggered it? Did she have a good day at school? You did the right thing of course and luckily your husband was available to talk to her.

You know, those are good questions. Things I should have asked. She seemed to have a good day at school, when I asked, after she got off the bus. And she was fine until then. Looking back, I should have asked her. But at the time, I was more focused on trying to help her feel better. I am glad that my husband was still at his mom's and she got to talk to him.

@dodo19 As long as it made her feel better that is all good, I just have been around a long time now and with all these grandkids I think about things in little different ways.

This is a touching post. I dont have a kid but i feel your child’s sadness, is there any alternative for his present job so that he can have more time for his family?

It is definitely difficult. I know he is looking at other options at the moment. So, hopefully, there may be something. But we'll just have to see.

Yes, they are. She started off mostly my girl, but now she's definitely his too. I know she will understand that he does have to go work, if she doesn't already. It's hard.

Aww that is so sad, I can understand how you feel. A little girl must have her daddy on weekends glad she got to speak to daddy.

Thankfully, he doesn't work on weekends. She misses him during the week when he goes to work. It's really hard, for her sometimes.

Did she tell you what was the cause behind her missing her daddy so much? I'm glad she at least got to talk to him on the phone, I'm sure that helped a lot just hearing his voice. When I was little, my mother worked nights, so there were many nights that I would go to bed completely sad that my mom was not there to tuck me into bed. It can be hard for a child, I completely understand.

She didn't say what started it. She just started to cry and told me that she missed daddy. I'm sure it did help a bit to talk to him on the phone. It must have been hard for you as a kid. I'm sure you really missed your mom, when she had to work. It can be hard on any kid.

@moffittjc Those must have been happy moments for you for sure. To be able to see her. I can definitely imagine how hard it was for her. I did work evenings at one point, and would come home when my kids were asleep. It wasn't easy. So, I can relate.

@dodo19 My mom didn't have to work all night long, she just worked late into the evening. Most nights she would get home just before midnight, but some nights would be earlier. There were many occasions where I would hear her arrive home and I would jump up out of bed to run and greet her and give her a hug. Those were always happy moments for me. And she never got mad that I was awake at such a late hour, I think she was just as happy to see me too! As hard as it was for me, can you imagine how much harder it is for a mother to not be home to tuck her kids into bed?

It is too bad. I know he'd much rather be home with us rather than go to work, especially on nights like last night. But like you said, he still has to work, unfortunately.

Poor little one. It does tear your heart out to see them so sad. And when there is nothing you can do to stop the tears it really hits you. When my husband went away for 4 days to go to his Aunt's house on a hunting trip, Little Miss was beside herself. We did video chats on Facebook Messenger and that helped a bit.

It is so sad when they miss one of their parents but on the bright side of that, he must be a really good dad for him to miss her so much. The good times she has with him is what she will remember x
