How many songs are simply titled “Magic”? This “Magic” makes the cut by virtue of being performed by the musical wonder from down under. Look, it is Olivia Newton-John and I do mean look. She can get away with reading a telephone book. The song is from “Xanadu” which was a remake of the 1947 Rita Hayworth fantasy movie “Down to Earth.” Olivia plays muse to a roller boogie songwriter and a dancing Gene Kelly is inexplicably on hand. The movie was a dismal box office failure while the soundtrack was a hit thanks to Olivia and ELO. “Magic” is one of Olivia’s biggies going gold at #1 four consecutive weeks on Billboard. The song was written by John Farrar who also penned Olivia’s hits “Have You Ever Been Mellow,” “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “You’re the One I want.” John Lennon stated he liked “Magic.”
