Asterisk. This is a country hit today. At least most people have heard the name of this country great, though. Either way, this is a favorite song of mine, period, and there was no way I could leave it off. Here's today's "hit" song with "eyes" in the title. #5: The Shelter of Your Eyes - Don Williams I mentioned this when Williams died a couple of years ago: he's about the closest thing the 70s and 80s had to a Jim Reeves. And, given how much I love Jim Reeves, that's a very high compliment. After his time in the folk group the Pozo-Seco Singers, Don Williams made the progression to country music. His country music was far more stripped down than the "countrypolitan" that was popular at the time. In a number of ways, his success helps bring about the traditionalist and "outlaw" revival in the mid-70s. This is just a gorgeous love song. One of Williams' early hits, and one that paved the road that eventually led him to the Country Music Hall of Fame.
