When I started the dual countdowns of favorite hit and non-hit songs with “eye” in the title I said I was not including “That’s When I See the Blues (In Your Pretty Brown Eyes)” by Jim Reeves because I’ve used it 600 times before. Both of today’s songs, though, are repeats....but I’ve only used them 80 times. A long time to go before they’re retired. Here’s an old favorite for the obscure “eye” song.
#3: Arthur Koestler’s Eyes - Robbie Fulks
Hey, I haven’t seen Robbie in five months! It’ll probably be a little longer, too, because he’s living in L.A. (Los Angeles, not Lower Alabama
) right now (his wife works for the Oprah Network, and their son is in college out there). I’ve got plenty of good memories, though.
That includes this song, which I’ve seen him do a number of times. From his first download album 50 Vc. Doberman, this incredible song (I think it was an outtake of Couples in Trouble, because it has the lyrical and musical feel of other songs on that album) pretty much guarantees that it’ll never be a hit. First, it mentions an author who’s not Jackie Collins or Stephen King in the title. Secondly, there’s a line in the song that mentions Greek astronomer Aristarchus. As I said in a presentation I did on Fulks at the country music conference one year, that won’t fly in a “shake it like Donkey Kong” commercial world.
Oh, and you have to listen to the entire song to get the story of a Youngstown stripper who moves to New York City and becomes a fashion model. It’s not in the first couplet.
That’ll keep you out of the top 40 for life.

Koestler was not everyone's cup of tea. Very political.
