Well, if yesterday provided no surprises, you’ll probably fall asleep from the boredom of today’s selection in my list of “obscure” or non-hit songs with “eye” in the title. Gee, have I ever mentioned I like this band before? Anyway, here’s today’s song from the non-hit side.
#2: Pale Blue Eyes - R.E.M.
Oh, you’re shocked. Oh, you’re surprised. Oh, you’re amazed that they aren’t #1.
Even the best have to take a back seat to some songs.
I said this when I featured R.E.M. doing “Femme Fatale” and this song: we really missed a treat by not getting an entire tribute album to the Velvet Underground from the boys from Athens. They also recorded “There She Goes Again” and released it as a B-side. The three are on Dead Letter Office, which I guess is as close as we get.
According to Picky Wedia, Lou Reed wrote this song about being in love with a woman who was married at the time (“I thought of you as just about everything I had but couldn’t keep”).
R.E.M.’s cover, cut in half from the original (last two verses not included) makes a great Lou Reed song a great R.E.M. song.
