Use of Images on MyLot

This discussion is more to clarify my own understanding as much as anything. I'll be interested to read what other people think. After the recent shooting tragedy in New Zealand there were a few posts on here where people used press photos that had been in the media. I've always understood that such images are not in the public domain and therefore can't be used. I don't know enough about copyright to be sure, but I thought photos from newspapers and other media were the property of those institutions. When I was writing my second book I wasn't allowed to use some images without asking for permission. Even using Google Images has limitations, where you have to be sure that any image used there is free to use and doesn't have restrictions. There are other sites such as Pixabay that have free to use images. So, some people could be using some images they have no right to use? I'm interested to read other people's thoughts on this. Image here is my own, taken in a small Melbourne cafe a few years ago.

You have raised an important question. I always use my own photos unless I use Pixabay, and I state that in my post. I just read this in the site guidelines and I think it may help answer your questions: Can I use news articles images and videos in my discussions? - Yes, by all means. These things enhance discussion and are encouraged. However, we ask that you not copy and paste entire articles. A discussion may contain a paragraph or so from an article, but the bulk of it should be your own thoughts. Also remember to always include a source link for the article. Posting nothing more than a video is also not acceptable; the post must contain your own thoughts and content along with the video or image.

Thanks for that Carol. Those are the rules for this site, but I am probably thinking more about copyright laws.

@myklj999 Yeah I know but I thought it might help answer her question about the latest NZ articles that are being shared around. I couldn't find anything in the guidelines about photos and copyright specifically.

@valmnz Got it. Well I guess JJ answered your question. Although I thought like you did about copyright laws. I only use mine and Pixabay photos.

I always use my own so am not sure what the law would be on it. But most news articles and stuff are usually ok with it if you link to them.

It is a copyright infringement unless you get permission. I use my own photos most of the time or free images.

Yes, I agree. I was surprised to see people from other countries using media images when they wrote about our recent shootings.

I believe you are correct about the use of media photos. I try to stick with my own pictures here but will occasionally resort to Pixabay if I don't have an appropriate illustration. I always give credit when I use Pixabay.

I usually do with Pixabay too. I was concerned to see media images being used that I'm sure will be copyrighted in my country.

I use my own image, although sometimes it's not very clear to see.

Yes, I can see attributing source of links as important. I am more concerned about people using copyright images from media sources.

Yes, I agree, this is the wisest way to go. And there are sites that state there are no restrictions on image use.

I would think that Press images were not be used due to copyright laws!
