Cool climate is ideal for Dahlias

There are so many flowers that I wish I could cultivate but sadly the weather here is not conducive to several of those flowers that grow well in a cooler climate.
Dahlias are such flowers that thrive in such a climate. My friend in the UK has a huge collection of dahlias in every shade, size and hue.
Have you tried your hand at growing these flowers?

We never had Dahlias, the only Dahlia I knew was a pretty girl when I was in college
