Today is the 87th anniversary of my mom's birth, and I thought I'd celebrate her life and our great relationship by counting down ten rock songs she loved. This isn't necessarily a "countdown" in the sense of ranking songs in an order. Some of these you can probably understand someone born in 1932 liking, while others might make you go, "Really???? Your mom liked that?" Here's an appropriate beginning. #10: Centerfield - John Fogerty I never thought I'd see my mom's birthday also be Opening Day of baseball season. But here we are! And yes, my mom loved this ode to baseball (and John Fogerty's musical comeback). She also loved "Rock and Roll Girls" and "I Can't Help Myself" off that album. Now, my dear mother was white. NOT "white" as in Caucasian (although she was), but white as in....well, see The Jerk. In fact, I told her once that she was "so white." About six years later the phone rang and it was my mom, in tears from laughing so hard. "I'm watching The Jerk," she said, "and I know now what you meant when you said I was white." So, to see her try to clap along to this song was painfully hilarious. But give her points for liking the song. Most people her age would've turned it off. Centerfield Written by John C.
