Im wondering if there will ever be big huge artists that stand the test of time from this generation of musicians. The likes of Elvis, Michael Jackson,Queen ,David Bowie and Elton John and George Michael. I am sure their music will still be recognised in many many years to come and they are icons, I don't see the music industry now days producing anything or anyone who will have that kind of impact or fame and longevity. Do you agree or am I just turning into an oldie who thinks it was better in my day

I agree with you. But I think the songs of Bruno Mars, Adele, Lady Gaga will last.

I do love Bruno but I still don't think he will be as big as the likes of Freddie Mercury in many years to come.

I don't think so. As big as Lady Gaga is, I can only name her Oscar winner Shallow and she spends so much time doing tribute covers with Metallica, Stones etc. Celine Dion was once huge and has faded. Adele has faded a bit.

There are some great new artists but they may not have the wide appeal of some of the older ones you mentioned.

Everyone's said that about "their" music versus "new" music. Remember that Elvis was hated by a lot of people who thought he was ruining music. As Paul Simon said in a song, "Every generation throws a hero up the pop chart." I don't think there'll be "universally" appreciated singers anymore, for a number of reasons. The quality is one reason, and these days celebrity seems to be based far more on "personality" (or "attitude") and "looks" than any real or imagined talent. Also, there are so many resources for music (and other forms of entertainment) that it's difficult for someone to hit a chord with the masses. In the 80s Thursday night was "must see TV" on NBC (Cosby Show, Family Ties, Cheers, Night Court, and Hill Street Blues,) and people didn't go anywhere but in front of their TV to watch. Before that it was Saturday night on CBS (All in the Family, M*A*S*H, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, and Carol Burnett). That "necessity" doesn't exist today, because people who weren't even born in 1974 can "binge watch" an entire season of MTM or M*A*S*H. I think the price has something to do with it as well. I figured up that I saw the Eagles twice, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Joe Walsh solo concerts, Randy Meisner with the reunited Poco, and Timothy Schmit with Warren Zevon for a combined total of less than $70...which won't get you in the "cheap seats" at an Eagles concert today. Beatles tickets were three bucks at the height of Beatlemania!! Now, it's $150, $200, or more. That's going to restrict the longevity/popularity of people who simply aren't going to put a car payment down on a pair of concert tickets. Finally, the means of anyone to have their music heard (Bandcamp, You Tube, etc.) means that you can hear what you want and ignore the rest. The lack of quality has a lot to do with the fact that we probably won't see another Elvis or Beatles, certainly. There are other factors, though, contributing to the mix. PS -- sorry you asked?

Every generation has different kind of music as good I think that there are some talented artists nowadays but they don't compare with the old "masters"
