As a nation, India as a single political entity and as a concept has seen many ups and downs in its ancient, medieval and modern history. Culturally, except for a few conquests in South East Asia during the early 2nd to 7th century AD (and that too with not harming the indigenous people), and perhaps some expeditions in the BC years, some might not have been documented as well.
India has not been an aggressive and land conquering nation, unlike many others- especially the European powers who once had conquered many parts of the earth- like The British Empire, Portuguese, French, Spain etc.(and even by United States- though many were indirectly manipulated by US).
Yet India has had modern wars- 1947,1965, 1971 and 1999 (Limited war in Kargil) and external threats are always there. India does not has any option to remain mere spectators when faced with external current and future threats.
Furthering this, India recently tested an Anti Satellite Missile by testing on one of its own Satellites.
This is a purely defensive capability and with this India joins an elite club of members- US, Russia and China!
One can criticize that with still so much poverty and inequality still in India, why to waste money on these advanced things.
Yet one has to defend one's country else efforts for Economic Development too get impacted.

@arunima25 yes there has to be a balance. Perhaps one such test is enough and there should not be a tendency to start any sort of an arms race- whether at land and air/sea or in space.

Yes definitely India has never followed policies that led to annexing others' territories unlike some other countries.
