The Four Gospels of our Lord Jesus.

It is important to know that the Catholic Church did not come out of the Bible. First and foremost, Christianity is not a religion of a book. The Catholic doctrine is not a collection of writings. The Life of our Lord Jesus were written by the four Gospel writers because as time progressed after the demise and resurrection of our Lord, there was a necessity to put the Life and Ministry of Jesus into a written record. Matthew wrote for the Jews as his audience. He was a tax collector, sort of dishonest for he would bargain with the Romans. He was despised by his people but his gospel was most patrioticprefiguring 129 old testament references, 53 citations, and 76 allusions. Mark was closest to Simon Peter, the Rock. He actually transcribed Peter as he spoke to the Gentiles. His language was swift with vivid actions which the Romans understood. Luke was the doctor and he utilized medical terms in his narratives of healing. He alone narrated the Virgin Birth. Luke's target audience was the Greeks. John the Beloved wrote towards the end of the first century, as an old man. It is important to take into account that all the apostles died violently and only John lived to be old. He wrote now for the Christians. He wrote with the intimacy of his Master, thus his gospel was considered the greatest ever written. Hoping this discussion could help in our understanding of our duty as Christians, to bring our Lord and His Good News to the ends of the world. After all, we are the new apostles and it is our duty to live and preach the Gospel of Jesus.

I am absolutely amazed at how well you know the Bible. Did you learn it all on your own or go to Bible study?

I attended a parochial school as a child, and later, a convent school, and then the University of Santo Tomas for college wherein higher Theology, as Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas was required.. Basically though, as a Catholic, I attended Mass Sundays and during the Liturgy of the Word, three readings were made: one from the Old Testament, another from the Epistles, and the last one, the Gospel. Then the readings were followed by a Homily, an explanation of the readings. If one attends Sunday Mass 54 weeks of the year, one would have known 1/3 of the Bible, I listened very intently all my life.

@eileenleyva That's an excellent background. I can see where you learned so much scripture.

@LindaOHio When my daughters were growing up, we read the Children's Bible cover to cover every Holy Week, as a quiet activity.

I probably should quit commenting and giving my opinion because I'm afraid I will offend you!

Oh no, I am not offended in any way by comments. Every response was put there for a reason. In fact, St. Francis was peppered with criticisms, and that made him seek the guidance of the Holy Father in Rome. When comments come our way, we must seek guidance on how to best tell the truth. I am grateful for you comments. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
