Why Does The Special Olympics Need Taxpayer Funding Anymore?

The Special Olympics is a great organization that has accomplished awesome things. The athletes who compete in these games are awesome people who have not only overcome physical and mental disabilities, but can compete at amazing level of dedication and strength. They are true athletes.
There was recently a "controversy" about their taxpayer funding. US Sec. of Education Betsy DeVos recommended cutting the $15 million going to the Special Olympics from the federal budget. Because of the backlash Prs. Trump announced that the organization has no fear of losing that funding. It will continue.
But why? Why does an organization that cleared $18 million in profits last year need any taxpayer funding? The fact they are doing so well with private, voluntary donations and grants should be celebrated. It should be considered part of their great accomplishments.
The fact we can't even cut funding an organization that proves beyond question that they don't need it tells me neither party really gives a crap about cutting spending.
To say that cutting spending means we don't care is just plain lying.

I must agree the Special Olympics should be left alone. They do a great job and give so much confidence and happiness to the participating athletes whose life is difficult as it is.

But the taxpayer money isn't helping them do that. They made $18 million in profits lasts year, not one penny of the $15 million from the government wasn't needed.

@ParaTed2k could it be that there is money going into the wrong pockets?

@RasmaSandra I doubt it. The Special Olympics is pretty open about their financing. They are simply a great organization that people and businesses are proud to sponsor.
An organization no longer needing taxpayer funding should be considered a great thing, not a controversy.

Yes, I think it's healthy for school to have to compete for funding. It isn't the responsibility of parents to sacrifice their kids to failing schools.
