An Atheistic Bible Study Of The Gospel Parables Counting The Cost

Luke 14: 25-33 has the only version of this troubling, perhaps even vile parable. Jesus was finding that the provision of food and drink at his sermons and the promise of miracles, was drawing hangers on and spectators who were not really prepared for the harsh discipline of becoming true Christians. Many just enjoyed the spectacle and freebies on offer. Who could blame them? Jesus apparently. Jesus now berates those insincere followers, insisting that if they were not willing to suffer, carry their cross (burden) and leave home, even hating their own wives, mothers, fathers, children and communities, they have no right to call themselves his disciples. It is a classic hallmark of modern cults to split up families and demand great sacrifices of money and materialism by followers and here, Jesus does just that too. Jesus adds two parable examples to illustrate his point. He talks of a man building a tower without first planning costs, design, and how much material (tone, mortar, etc.) the structure will need. This tower is doomed to fail to be completed or fall down. The second example he shares is that of a military general sending his men into battle without planning, strategy or awareness of the enemy numbers and strengths. Again, the venture will fail, most likely with great tragedy. Jesus sees the Christian unwilling to leave his family or suffer as similarly unprepared and doomed to fail. He may have a point if that is what his creed demands, but for me it is grounds to plan to protect family by not going near such divisive teachings in the first place. Arthur Chappell

The word "hate" is what is making this Bible passage controversial. It's interpretation would depend on how you view the Christian faith. It's not only cults but all major religion that demand allegiance or loyalty from their followers. How else can they grow? The passage and parables is most likely Jesus demanding loyalty from his disciples and forewarning them of what they have to give up and the hardship they will face. Another divisive Bible passage I find troubling is Matthew 10:34-36

yes that passage again talks of splitting up families, even violently, after all, if your parents don't share your beliefs or you their's, some of the family at least won't get redemption or heaven.

I would make great sacrifices for my family but not for money.

It's interesting that the "Christians" were more interested in "the show" than their religion.

@enlightenedpsych2 I've never been impressed with "the show". Maybe that's what others look for. Beautiful churches are nice...there's no doubt about that.

I think Jesus had a great point in that far too many don the mantle of Christianity without wanting to make any sacrifices.

@snowy22315 If God is so powerful no one should need to sacrifice anything for him to save them

I can tell that this structure shows the history in the past. A story that needs to be known by the locals.

Incredible looking cathedral. I have never been a fan of "show" when it comes to religion. I am a believer and strong in my faith and the best place I ever listened to the word of the Lord with at summer camp where they had built an altar out of rocks with a cross made of birch logs and the seats were all made of rocks. Just plain from nature and the best place to worship on beautiful summer mornings.

@arthurchappell and I think that is probably the best way to honor the Lord if you are a believer right out in nature and the open without any grandeur or giant cathedrals and so on.
