In her book, Illustrations of Bible Truths, Ruth Peters conveyed the story of a little child who, at the funeral of a minister, was seen hopping lightheartedly through the cemetery at dusk. Someone asked, “Aren’t you afraid of this place?” “Oh no,” she replied, “I only cross through here to get home.”
Indeed, death for us Christians is only a “crossing-through to get home.” It is not ultimate and final destiny. Delving into the story more deeply, I realize this little child who is not afraid of crossing through the cemetery at dusk has a valuable message to us - hope beyond death! As the psalmist in Psalm 23:4 fittingly puts it, “I may walk through valleys as dark as death, but I won’t be afraid.” There is home at the end of the road awaiting us, it means. Why should we be afraid? There is a famous line in the movie “Star Wars” where Obi-Wan Kenobi meets Darth Vader. He says, “You cannot win, Darth. Should you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.” That is what Christ said to evil: In my death I will defeat you.

That’s one reason why Jesus calls us to become more like a little Child in our Faith!
