Punks in Vegas left a nice thought provoking post on Facebook. I found it neat even“ think they are a Offspring fan and I am to a point. This stuff always was neat how punk actually broke into the mainstream for the first time in its life. at least in this country. It was and is a neat story. "Up until [Smash] I didn’t think any of our bands would truly break through. We had some groups on Epitaph that were bigger than others, but none of them had ever crossed over into mainstream acceptance. What the Offspring did was leapfrog over everybody.” Brett Gurewitz. ‘Smash,’ it’s not just the name of the album but also a perfect descriptor for its success. Released on this day 25 years ago it not only became Epitaph records’ highest selling album, it because the highest selling non-major label album of all time. They achieved this feat by writing about what they knew. “I was a grad student and I was commuting to school every day, driving through East L.A. Gangland central,” explained front man Dexter Holland. “I was there the day of the L.A. riots. So I was very aware of that part of the world, and a lot of that gun stuff came out in songs like ‘Come Out and Play.’ But there was also some humor to it, like with ‘Bad Habit.’ There was a lot of freeway violence and road-rage at that time. And my car was so shitey that people used to literally throw things at me on the freeway because I wasn’t going fast enough.” "The more cynical you become, the better off you'll be." What’s your favorite Epitaph Records album?" - Punks In Vegas I wrote back True, but before that heard it was Nirvana that even gave Offspring a chance and from the sounds of things Operation Ivy had the seeds planted on top of that. That being said a reward for Punks In Vegas for bringing history in the mix where most do not even care about how things came to be. How do you know you like something if you do not know the history behind it. You leave that part out, you are likely to feel shafted when you see the true colors come out. Perfect California song and sorry Offspring does not merit a place on state sign, but cool album and song all the same.
