Easter Herring Festival!

How about coming to our small town for its annual Easter Herring Festival?
You know how many places have a celebration or festival to highlight whatever that town is relatively well known for?
Well, here it's that bony fish, the glorious herring. The Herring Festival started here many, many years ago when people would set up cookers in yards to fry up herrings and hushpuppies for the crowds.
It gradually grew into a three day party. Only, now there aren't many herrings to be found. It's illegal to catch them here, so people have to bring them up from South Carolina. So, the fish isn't as fresh, but hey, it's still a herring.
On Friday, there's entertainment by local bands and a small carnival for the kids.
Saturday, they have an Easter parade (our church float has won first place several times.) Then at dark thirty, there are fireworks.
Or is it Sunday night for the fireworks? Can't remember since we seldom go to the Herring Festival any more. We sit in our back yard and watch the fireworks or sometimes go down to the elementary school and watch, sitting in the back of a pickup truck. Usually depends on if we have a grandkid with us that weekend.
For many years, the festival was held on what we called Easter Monday. Then the holiday was changed to Good Friday, so no one had Monday off from work any longer.
Anyway, if you're in eastern NC this beautiful Easter weekend, come on by. We'll fry you up a delicious, crispy herring and throw in some hot hushpuppies for free.

Sounds like fun...except for the fish. No Easter festivals here that I know of.

@1creekgirl I'm glad its better now, it would be a shame for that behavior to ruin the fun for everyone.

It used to be fun years ago, but then there was too much "night life" with drinking, some fighting, etc. I think it's much better now, but we still seldom go.

@1creekgirl I read that as a hearing festival and was going to ask how that worked. Herring makes more sense.

If there were a hearing festival, I'd be first in line!

@1creekgirl actually, the herring is already pickled and no bones anymore. Then it is sandwich in a bread roll with gherkins and onion slices.
