This weird word was coined in 1954 by American author Sylvia Wright (please click the link below). She overheard someone misquoting lines of an old ballad: "They have slain the Earl O'Moray and laid him on the green" was repeated by the young singer as "They have slain the Earl O'Moray and Lady Mondegreen". The definition of mondegreen is 'a word or phrase that results from the mishearing of something said or sung'. We all know that it's easy to make this mistake and not even realize it. Oh, the embarrassment to find out you've been singing your favorite song wrong for twenty years! A few years ago, I heard a comedian who said she always wondered about the deep symbolism in the song "Hotel California" by The Eagles. She found this line to be especially mysterious "On a dark dessert highway, Cool Whip in my hair." Do you know any common or funny mondegreens? Have you been guilty of doing this? I have!

Before the internet, Song hit's magazines provided the correct lyrics. But I can't count the times singing the wrong words. Sometimes I just hum the tune to skip over the lines I forgot. Try remembering all the lyrics of a song like "American Pie" by Don McLean (one of my favorites yet I still forget many passage)

Thanks for your comment @josie_ .. Me too. I just hum or mumble along to the tune when I can't remember the words. Now I've got the words "Bye, bye Miss American Pie, drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry" repeating in in my head.

I listen to The Monkees fairly often too. Once we learn a song the wrong way, it's difficult to get used to hearing it the correct way! Thank you @RasmaSandra.
