The Ytterbium Eastercon Convention 2019 Easter Sunday 21st April 2019 Moomins

Preston, England
April 26, 2019 3:26pm CST
This panel on the Moomins was presented by Ali Baker, Linnea Angelmark, Jukka Halme and Fran Dowd One of my favourite presentations of the whole convention. I mainly know of The Moomins from the TV cartoons. They are hippo shaped trolls in the Finnish books of Tove Jansson. The stories sometimes take on a dark edge with the cute looking trolls lost in woodland, swamps, attacked by serpents, facing extinction by comets and floods, etc. There is a song by Bjork called The Moomins And The Comet Chase which I only learned of through the talk here. This is the song on Youtube. It features in a movie I have yet to see. In Finland there is a Moomin theme park and lots of Moomin related merchandise. Boxes of little Moomin chocolates and licorice pieces were shared with everyone in the audience. A real delight both as a nostalgia trip and for the lovely sharing that accompanied the presentation. I love Moomins! I think most people in Northern Europe will have grown up reading the books, at least I hope also todays children read the books. I've never seen any of the TV shows. I've read some of the cartoons, but they were a bit strange when I was used to the books.

@Torunn they did need longer stories to tell such complex ideas than a few panels in a comic trip could convey

@arthurchappell You're right, there's really quite a lot of things going on in the stories. I saw an exhibition with paintings by Tove Jansson in Helsinki once. It was great, she painted moomins of course but also lot of other stuff.
