Are Stephen King's Movies as good as the original books?

When I read Stephen King's books, I have never found the movies made after them to be as good. A Stephen King book can keep me riveted for hours. I can read without putting it down. I saw Christine about three times, and that was the only exception to this rule. I loved that movie. The rest of the movies I could take or leave. I also loved the Bachman books which he wrote under a different name.

I much prefer to read his books than watch the movies, however watching the movie after reading the book can be alright too, you pick up all the details that have been left out and have a lot more knowledge of the characters than you get from the movie. My favourite author James Patterson has had a few movies made from his books, ie - along came a spider and kiss the girls. I was a bit disappointed with the movies as the books were soooo much better.

stephen king - stephen king
I have read most of Stephen Kings books and seen some of the movies both of which I have enjoyed. But I find the books always better than the movies as they cut alot out, also I think our imagination as we read is different so when you see the movie you think well that wasn't how I imagined it. Does that make sense, I hope so, lol!

You make perfect sense and I agree. The movie is only that producers vision of what he got out of the story. It cannot match ours, so we are disappointed.

No, I think that the books are far superior than any movie, except Christine (perhaps).

book - book
no his books are good.. but like any novel-base movie, the movies fail to capture the heart of millions of stephen kings fans.

You are absolutely right. His words on paper are magic, but they lose it on film.

I have found that most movies that I see after reading the books are a huge let down. I think that there is no substitue for your imagination. When you are reading, you see things a certain way in your head, so when you see them on a screen, it will never live up to what you had hoped for it to be.

When on the screen, someone else's imagination is being presented. Like you say, it will never match what your own brain can do with the same text.

I thought Christine was a pretty lame movie acutally. The only movie I think that lived up to the book was The Green Mile, it was a great movie. I always watch the movies becuase I like to see other people's interpretations of his stories. Have you seen Rose Red? It's pretty good, I think its a screenplay he wrote, so it wasn't a book first

I LOVE Stephen King and have for many years. I read his work when he was Richard Bach ( even though I did not know they were same person) My first book by him as Richard bach was Jonathan Livingston Seagull. I think my whole life has been lived according to that BOOK! I agree the movie industry does not do justice to stephen Kings ability to keep you glued to his work. I am always VERY disappointed to watch the movies produced from his books. So keep on reading and watch the movies just for entertainment.

Richard Bach is not Steven King. Richard BACHMAN is Steven King. That's ok, easy mistake. Jonathan Livingston Seagull was really good too though. And I loved Illusions..."And the Messiah said..."I quit..."". I don't think it's just King's books that deteriorate in film production. I think it's that whole thing discussed earlier in this thread about how the reader pictures one thing while the producer pictures another. Thanks for your participation.

I thought that Green Mile was great as a book and a movie. Pet Sematary was another of the books that I liked the movie about as much. Otherwise, I like reading his books best

Yes, I prefer the books too. However, I do find that since I have Internet I don't read as much of anything as I used to. But that is another discussion!

The Shining was good, and I enjoyed Pet Cemetary (but didn't read that book). Other than that I'd say the movies haven't been as good as the books. Some of his books are complex and have effects that aren't easy to portray on film.

It really depends for me. I enjoyed the movie version of IT more than the book. I enjoyed The Stand book and movie equally - it's my favorite adaptation, really. I liked The Shawshank Redemption book better than the movie. And I loved, loved, loved both Stand By Me and The Body. I think it depends on how much influence Stephen King has over the project. Have you seen Kingdom Hospital? Not based on a book, but absolutely brilliant.

Kingdom Hospital is, in my opinion, one of the greatest things Stephen King has ever done. You can rent it anywhere, and it's worth the watch. It's a serial drama with a beginning, middle and end, and Stephen King oversaw everything.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Stand by Me/The Body - both were excellent! I saw Stand By Me years after reading The Body and I kept knowing what was going to happen! Half way through I realized it was Stephen King and spent the rest of the movie looking through my collection to find the story!!!

I love Stephen King books, but hate the movies. When The Shining first came out - early 80's? - I wrote Stephen King a letter telling him the movie was horrible. I got a letter back from him (or his agent??) saying that they rejected his screenplay so he really didn't have much say in the movie. I have stopped watching the movies, I just read his books.

Shawshank Redemption was a better movie in my opinion as was The Green Mile. His books are great as well as most of the movies that have been made out of them. See, I don't love Christine and the tv movie Rose Red wasn't all that great. He should leave all his movies up to Frank Darabont who directed Shawshank and Green Mile. He's working on another King adaptation right now, "The Mist" set to release in 2008. I hope it's as good as his last two, or who knows, it might be even better!

I don't think the movies do any justice to the books, but then again I love to read. I havn't seen Christine, granted I havn't read many of his books or seen many of his movies but I thought the book Misery was so much better than the movie. I didn't know he ever wrote under another name. Thank you for sharing

You should read the Richard Bachman books. They are excellent. There is a volume out that includes four novels in one. I can't remember all the names offhand, but I particularly remember The Long Walk, and Thin. They were in that volume and were really good.
