Almost Had A Bad Accident

Yesterday I went outside to do my regular check on the baby chicks. I always check their water and replenish it if necessary and fill their feeder with food. This is done several times a day because baby chicks grow quickly and eat a lot. It was a good thing I walked out just when I did as one of the Buff Orpington chicks had his neck stuck through the wire of the run. She was stuck. I got her head back through the opening without hurting her and checked her out real quick. She seemed to be fine and I put her back in the run. She resumed her normal activities and I stood by and watched her for a little while just to be sure. I was lucky to catch this little accident in time because the chick could have panicked and eventually broken her neck or had a heart attack. I'm so glad this story had a happy ending.

It's good you were there at the right time. Are your chicks going to become layers or are they for your family meat consumption?

They are layers. I love having fresh eggs all year round :)

@sunrisefan Organic eggs. I don't kill them for meat.

@kareng That's good! You are self-sufficient in poultry and I guess they're organic.

I didn't even think of that possibility :( I want to get started on a new small grow out pen now.

@kareng They are not really very smart creatures. I lost an adult duck in a similar way. It stuck its head between the slates of a wood pallet. It should have been able to pull back easily but for some reason didnt.

And me. I would have felt so bad finding him hung through the wire like that. I love my babies.

I hope the chick recovers, do you get eggs from them or they are too young for that?

These babies are just a few weeks old and too young for laying. I got them to add to my flock. Hens start laying at around 5-6 months of age. I love the fresh eggs :)
