2017 – A Practical Guide To The Resurrected - Reprint edition by Shoreline Of Infinity 2019 – Spoiler alerts A story of some value to me in that the author signed copies at the same table as I signed copies of my pub signs study, Watch The Signs issued at the same time at the Ytterbium Eastercon science fiction convention in London 2019. His Birth was the runner up story in a competition for science fiction short stories themed around medical research and experimentation. The title story of the collection is from the winning story, by Seth Marlin. I’ll try to review Marija’s deeply moving story without giving too much away. A mother sidesteps the difficult questions her inquisitive son asks about how he came to be born, not the facts of life or his delivery (she freely tells him about that), but she is less prepared to tell him how he had to cause herself a great physical sacrifice in order to be free to conceive him. She does reveal he story to the readers fortunately, a tale of a woman's right to choose, a desperate circumstances choice, and picking extreme pain over painless recovery from physical injury that could lead to infertility. When her lover, a private clinic and a terrifying genetic entity try to rob her of the right to choose for herself, she resorts to terribly desperate measures to assert her own identity, preserve her fertility and embrace the pain that she knows is at least her own The story has echoes of the horrors of the Thalidomide Disaster, but ultimately its conclusion is a hopeful one - an important and valuable story for our age.
