I just read in a certain book that the main cause of depression this days is due to the irrational beliefs and thoughts that we have as human beings. Looking deeper within myself and the people around me, I realise that this is true. Irrationality in this book has been defined as those thoughts and beliefs that are not true but they tend to upset us. They cause us to have feelings and emotions that lead to depressions. Some the irrational thoughts that I know of include those thoughts that you must always be perfect. This is irrational because as we all know, human is to error. Perfectionists often tend to develop depression whenever they fail in what they do. Irrational beliefs that I know of include those impacted by our religions. This is especially true for those religions that put pressure and dislike for sinners. The people who are named sinners end up hating themselves and Fall into depression for they feel not enough. What are some of the irrational thoughts and beliefs that you know of?

Yes these irrational thoughts may lead to depression. Some people are just over-thinkers like me. I am aware that I do overthink but I still do it. Irrational thoughts can also come from comparing yourself to other people. You see not everyone your age will have the same achievements and yet you compare yourself with them. With this, comes envy and irrational thoughts.

True, so the best thing to do is always be self aware and mindful. This will help you to catch yourself thinking irrationally or comparing yourself with others then you can substitute with rational thoughts.

@a_jerobon yes awareness correct. Even if you do overthink, when you are aware you can atleast lessen the overthinking.

I have had those irrationals thoughts before. The most irrational one is that I always want to do things perfeclty, and also I don't wanna make mistakes. When I make mistakes I am so hard on myself. Indeed those kinds of irrational thoughts had led me to some depression, and it still does.

I am glad that you are aware that those thoughts cause you to develop depression. Self awareness is the first step to dealing with depression. This is because you will be able to substitute those irrational thoughts to rational ones that do not cause depression.

@a_jerobon Totally. Though it is a little hard no to let myself be "swept off" by emotional thoughts. It is a constant blattle. Today I feel good, but a few days ago, I felt like rocking bottom again!

@jvicentevalera I always feel that way too, I guess it is life. So we should do our best to remain aware of this and never give up.
