Why You Don't Matter and That's ok.

Each of us matters simply because we are human beings. However that doesn't mean we matter to everyone, or even that everyone should matter to us. Why should we? There are 50,000 people in Sheboygan. Most of them have never heard of me. I have never heard of most of them. There is no reason that I should matter to more than a relative handful of them. There is no reason more than a relative handful of them should matter to me. What decides who should and shouldn't matter to you? It isn't how you interact with them, it's how you interact with them. In fact, most people who matter to you will never even know you exist... so why should they even care? Who shows up to your funeral has nothing to do with you mattered to you. It has everything to do with who you mattered to. Whose life you touched. I have saved many lives. Few of them will ever know my name. I have been asked for my autograph, cheered on, had standing ovations and been called a hero. Mostly by people who will ever know my name. Mostly people whose names I'll never know.. So why do we think we're supposed to matter to everyone? Guess what, we never will matter to everyone. We won't ever even matter to most people who matter to us... and that's ok Who matters to you is up to you. Who you matter to is up to other people. What people think of us is really none of our business.
