When I was a young US Army Paratrooper, we used to joke about how we would someday pay for our rough and tumble lifestyle we were living. Jumping out of airplanes, working our backs and knees with combat load ruck sacks, obstacle courses and Field Training Exercises, disaster recovery operations and war. For me it didn't end there. After Regular Army I went into the National Guard... more rough, more tumble. I also went to college... BYU-Idaho Paramedic/Search & Rescue program. Our Search & Rescue training was in the Grand Teton Mountains, our internships were in inner city Atlanta, GA. 8 years Regular Army, 9 years National Guard, 12 years in EMS, Wild Land Firefighting, Security of Rock Concerts and even building antenna towers for cellular phone systems in the Utah Rockies... it all adds up. Then, 17 years ago, working as a paramedic in Milwaukee, WI; running the radio section in an Artillery Battalion and training the medics... the lights went out. After a lifetime of burning the adrenaline candle at both ends (and holding a lighter to the middle) I done burned out. So now at 56 I can't do most of what I used to do. I can't even do what most 56 year olds can do... With not a single regret! I can't do what I can't because I've done what I did.

In short, mission accomplished. I salute you sir. In my case, my philosophy in.life is inspired by Edward Everett Hale's poem which says, "I am only one But still I am one. I can't do everything But I can do something. And because I can't do everything I will not refuse to do that something."

Mine wasn't so philosophical. I was basically an adrenaline junky and service addict who found careers that fed both. lol

Well, you can certainly say you've done a lot and be glad for the memories. You could never get me to jump out of a plane. You can be proud of all you've done.

Serving your country that long in whatever capacity deserves a salute for your unwavering service to your country. I think you deserve to rest for now and enjoy your retirement with the family & friends around.
