Texas Bluff by Linda Warren in the fifth book in Harlequin series Texas Bluff. The 282 page book takes place in River Bluff and involves two high school sweethearts that made bad choices. Luke Chisum was the wild boy of River Bluff. There wasn't anything that him and his friends wouldn't bet on or try. So at 18 when Luke's friends triple dared him to ask out the Sheriff's daughter, well, Luke couldn't say no. What he didn't expect was to like Becky so much. That first date turned into them being a couple. Becky was head over heels in love with Luke when she found out about the dare. Not being able to get over the hurt and humiliation, she broke things off with him. Not being able to handle the pain of seeing Becky with someone new, Luke did the only thing he felt he could do, he ran. Luke's running though came in the form of joining the military. Luke flew blackhawks behind enemy lines to rescue wounded soldiers but one bad night got him medically discharged. Now he has a slight color issue in his eyes but nothing that keeps him from enjoying every day life. Back in River Bluff, he's trying to help his family at the ranch since his father has had a stroke. Running into Becky all the time stabs him in the heart every time. It doesn't help that she still can't look at him without daggers in his eyes. Becky doesn't hate Luke...not anymore but she's got a secret that she's kept for these sixteen years and she knows when she tells him, he'll never forgive her. Family secrets can kill a man when he's down, how much can Luke take in the span of a few days? Will he survive all the secrets that are going to come out? Just maybe Becky and Luke can salvage their relationship because sometimes high school love doesn't fade, sometimes it just...evolves. If you like relatively short stories or are in between books, I would recommend this book. It caught my attention from page one and kept me glued until the end with all the curve balls that poor Luke was thrown. He's such a good guy that kept some of his wild streak, you just can't help but like him. *image from google*
