Along with celebrating Mother’s Day I’m celebrating 1979, the year I joined the Navy, by looking at some favorites from 1979. Most of these songs people know, regardless of whether they were around in 1979 or not, because they’ve become “classic rock” staples. There are a few exceptions in the list. This song isn’t one of those.
#13: Goodbye Stranger - Supertramp
And waddaya know, here’s another one of those songs that you know is coming the minute you hear the DJ say, “coming up, we’ve got Supertramp.” (Well, either this or “The Logical Song.”)
I got a cassette of this album as soon as I got out of boot camp and wore it out. I like the dual feeling the song has, with the mellow piano part and the “hey, we’re a rock band!” guitar part.
You may be sick of it, but as I don’t listen to classic rock radio I don’t hear it every day. Because of that, it’s still an enjoyable memory.
Goodbye Stranger
Written by Rick Davies
Recorded by Supertramp

Did you take the long way home to come up with this one?
