2015 – Spoiler alerts A lovely, funny, bittersweet and ultimately very sad movie about a young man coming to terms with the terminal illness of his new best friend. Greg Gaines (Thomas Mann is a typical miserable sulky teenager, low in self-esteem, drifting through high school, passing his time by making comedy fan-movies with his mate, Earl (R J Cyler). Greg is coerced into making sympathy visits to his neighbour, Rachel, (Olivia Cooke) a girl who has been diagnosed with severe Leukaemia. Greg and Rachel gradually bond and Greg struggles to make a more serious movie in her honour, oblivious that the time he spends with her is seriously damaging his academic future as he barely attends school at all. Convinced that Rachel will beat her illness, he is crushed to discover that hope and time are running out for her but she is secretly taking steps to save him and his future too. Beautiful, tightly scripted, with great humour in the spoof movie clips. The character of Earl is rather underused, but the performances by Mann & Cooke are deeply affecting. There is a brief audio insert by Hugh Jackman speaking to Greg through a Wolverine poster on Rachel’s wall. Arthur Chappell

Reminds me of the movie where the girl and the boy have to remain a few feet apart because of their illnesses..

@LindaOHio the sign is for a Manchester pub that was once a cinema. It simply shows members of the audience as the lights go down for the film to start - I often use it to represent my film reviews

It sounds like really sad movie. I'm not in the mood to see a sad movie right now.

I have grown weary of "dying" stories though I do like Olivia Cooke. Is she putting on an American accent? She is British.

@JohnRoberts She plays it very naturally - the accent doesn't sound forced at all
