Say hello to the first loser! That’s what Vince Lombardi called second place. I sure don’t look at it that way: I got to play the game I love with people I love, and I did well enough to cash. So there, Vince!
As I rest up I’ll give you another song on my list of favorites with “mother” in the title (or some variation of “mother”), a countdown I began in honor of Mother’s Day last Sunday.
#4: Fujiyama Mama - Wanda Jackson
Wanda Jackson just announced her retirement from touring after over 60 years on the road. I’d say she deserves retirement.
When Wanda began, discovered by Country Music Hall of Fame member Hank Thompson, she was straight country. Then along came some truck driver from Tupelo and suggested that she try her hand at the fledgling rockabilly style.
She did, and soon she became known as “the female Elvis.”
Wonder why? Listen to this song. BTW, this was banned by a number of stations, because people read too much into the line, “When I stop erupting ain’t nobody gonna make me stop.” Oy.
After rockabilly faded, Jackson returned to country. Her hit “Right or Wrong” successfully welcomed her back to the fold (and was also a good-sized pop hit as well).
As I mentioned not too long ago when someone else mentioned her, I saw her a few years ago, and she was still amazing, with that voice as strong as ever.
