I Don’t But I Kind of Do

I had Amber for a few weeks over the Summer, she was maybe in seventh or eighth grade, I had fell doing something and broke my foot, so we go to the ER, and Amber has all the doctors and nurses convinced she is my daughter, and the truth is even to this day we have that bond, she’s got a relationship with her Mother but due to some of the things she endured, it was she and I Who were close! One Summer when we had her after her Mother had sent her up, and her Dad drove her up, I found myself at the courthouse with guardianship papers, we had Amber’s Dad’s blessing, he marveled at how well she did up here, but her Mother had decided to make matters worse by calling the police and having her daughter driven to her house in a police car, needless to say Amber, not her Father were amused, in fact she made sure it all unfolded while he was at work, for years we did not talk to Amber’s Mom, and Amber was struggling! I do talk to her Mom now, and we forgave her long ago, but it’s much harder for Amber, because there is so much more to the story, but this was definitely over the top! Especially since originally her Mother had asked me to take her in, to take guardianship of her, and I was more than ready or willing too! I knew of her heart condition, how easily she could go from well to sick, thankfully as she has gotten older, she’s stronger! I had heard the doctors say she had Cerebral Palsy, at first they said she would never walk or talk, but boy she showed them how wrong she was. Amber and I are still close, she still looks to me for advice, she asks me questions that a daughter would ask a Mother, she cries on my shoulder! I’ve fought for her and I always will! And of course I will be there for Paisley as well, though I know Amber will be a good Mother, she’s had lots of practice with Little Miss Lol! So when I went to the hospital that day, and Amber said that she was my daughter I simply smiled, she was determined to go into the office with me just as I had with her, when she was so sick, just as I had with her when her heart was broken over a first love, when she and I sat over homework, when she cane with me to Yoga, when I took her to Church reminding her that God loved her! So maybe when she told them that I was her Mother, it wasn’t so far fetched... When people ask if I have kids I say no but I kind of do, an amazing young lady named Amber Renee!
