The Mormon Extermination Act

In 1838, Governor Lilburn W. Boggs of the State of Missouri signed an order to have all members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints forcibly removed from his state. His order made killing a Mormon not only legal, but considered a patriotic act. The Missouri State Militia carried out the order, driving all members of the young church out of their state, by all means necessary. The order itself was forgotten to history over time. No one bothered rescinding it at first because there weren't any Mormons left anyway. It wasn't until the mid 1970 (almost a century and a half later) that a historian found that it was still in effect. It was quickly rescinded, and killing Mormons was once again murder.

Regardless of feelings toward Mormons, they have been treated abysmally in the past.

But we don't look back at them as victim, we revere them for their strength and faith.

Well, I learned something new about my state’s history today. Another reason to be ashamed to be from Missouri. When I move; I’m just going to pretend I always lived in Florida.

History happened, you didn't do it so there's no reason to be ashamed. We need to be able to talk about history without attaching guilt to it. That just makes people not want to talk about it, or worse, change the narrative in favor of modern agendas. It is also great that we are free to move around so we can live where we are more happy.

@Lolaze Yup! The Mormon Extermination Act is ancient history. Both The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Community of Christ have temples in and many congregations in Missouri. Great things for Missouri in general.

History is filled with injustice and hatred against every group one can think of.

Exactly! It's a human problem, not a specific demographic problem.
