11 weeks later, we completed the Sheboygan Police Department Citizens Academy. We got to learn what each unit of the SPD does for our community as well as get some good hands on training. We got to participate in High Intensity Scenarios (Shoot/Don't Shoot decisions), Low Intensity Scenarios (De-escalation and using communication skills), traffic stops, and (a highlight for me) the pistol range. Each week we had an officer from each unit in the department give a presentation on their responsibilities and how they are carried out. The point of the academy is to help citizens learn more about our police department so we can be better partners in keeping the peace in our communities. After all, it's not up to the cops to decide what kind of community we want to live in, it is up to the citizens.
