Closing out my countdown of favorite songs with “mother” or some variation in the title, in honor of Mother’s Day, do I go with comedy? Hard rock? NO! I go with the obvious, sentimental choice. Here’s my favorite “mother” song. #1: God Bless Her (‘Cause She’s My Mother) - Louvin Brothers So you don’t know who the Louvin Brothers were? Well, you’re gonna find out soon...maybe. There’s talk of a big-screen “biopic” on the Louvin Brothers, tentatively titled after Charlie Louvin’s on-his-deathbed memoirs Satan Is Real (which was the title of a Louvin Brothers album....one of the most talked-about album covers in country — or any — music history!). That worries me, because that book portrayed Charlie as the long-suffering saintly younger brother of hell-raising Ira, and that’s simply not true. Charlie was as big a jerk as Ira...and at least Ira had whiskey to blame it on. Charlie didn’t drink. Oh, well, let’s get to this song. Every Mother’s Day I post this song on my Facebook wall in memory of my lovely mother. It’s a pretty accurate description of how I felt — and still feel — about my mother. She may have been my mom, but she was also my best friend. You cannot even begin to imagine all the fun we had together. And, even though she’s been gone for over 11 years now, she will be the last one I’ll forget. Thanks for reading.
