First of all this is only my first rounds of rewrites, and no I haven’t posted them elsewhere! I will be leaving them up for a short period of time! So I hope you enjoy Prologue: “Naomi. Naomi Elizabeth!” The voice sounded like Bubbe, but my Grandmother had died five years earlier. I remembered sitting Shiva, mirrors covered for seven days, we are Messianic Jews, but it had seemed only right to mourn Bubbe in this way, she had survived the Holocaust, she deserved so much more. I wanted to reach out, to let Bubbe take me by the hand, and lead me to paradise. I wanted to sit at the feet of Yeshua, basking in his glory. I heard sirens too, and through the corner of my eyes I saw flashing lights, and my best friends Nadia's head against the dashboard, blood dripping from her face. A truck had come at us, fast, intentionally as if we were in a video game, but this was real. I felt Bubbe's hands on my shoulder, gentle, kind, worn from years of hard work. In the light of the sirens, I could almost see that tattoo, the numbers on her arm. Bubbe why don’t you have them removed? I asked. They are a reminder of such a horrible time in your life. No they are a reminder to the world that I survived, that Hitler could not destroy us all. Doesn’t remembering hurt Bubbe? It would hurt more if I let myself forget. Do you remember how you got your name?” I shook my head no, although I had. My Mother was Naomi, she died in the Holocaust, faded away until there was nothing left, my sister Elizabeth followed shortly after, they had shot her lining two women up side by side, one bullet, two deaths. Some had said I was too young to hear the stories, but even I knew that was not the truth, I was to old not to hear them. Naomi it is not your time. Bubbe had said, as I reached out my hand, wanting to follow Bubbe. Your Mother will need you, Nadia is going to need you, and Babula you know that as long as I’m in your heart, I will live on in you. I have left you something, when you are better you will understand. I nodded, listening as the jaws of life, helped to rescue Nadia and I from the twisted heap of metal, wrapped around a telephone pole. Why had someone tried to kill us? We were only first year college students!
