Reading: Do you/Did you Read to your Children?

I love to read and always have. I associate this love to being read to as a child. My mother also taught me how to treasure and appreciate books. I remember when my cousins used to come to visit from out of town. They would go through my bookcase, pull out books and many times write inside them. This horrified me and I used to dread when I got news that they were coming. I carried this tradition on when I had children of my own. They had lots of books and many were my own books that I had as young as 5 years old. That is how much I treasured my favorite books. Today my oldest daughter reads a lot. She has two children and two step children. She is carrying on the reading tradition with her kids. My other daughter with two kids also reads to her children. She is the oldest twin. I have divided up the books that I passed on to them that survived between these two daughters for their children. My third daughter and other twin is not married and does not have children. But she loves to read. I enjoy passing on books to her to read and we sometimes discuss books that we have both read. She never really took a liking to reading in school so this made me happy that she picked this habit back up. Do you read to your children? Do you let them read to you if they are learning to read? This is a way to help them in school and also learn new things that they otherwise would miss. Photo: Pixaby, public domain

Yes, I read to them and to our grandchildren. I even tell them our legends and folkloric stories by memory

Good job. Telling stories to them about legends and history is also good. Who doesn't love a story?

@kareng Oh, I do not know. I always liked to read and like a child I wanted to read, but my son does not like it.

I've always enjoyed reading, and I do read to my kids. They will come up and want me to read a book to them. I can't say no. My husband and I do want to encourage our kids to read.

@dodo19 It sounds like you have instilled the love of books and reading into them already. Good job.

I come from a family of readers, read to my kids, and grandkids. I was a teacher, so did all the tricks of the trade.

Yay, I know that you know firsthand how important this is in child development. I loved the expressions my kids made when making new discoveries when reading. Priceless.

@kareng My daughter-in-law read to the kids while she was pregnant, and our son also read them classic literature before they could read it themselves. Both kids are avid readers. It’s the best thing any parent can do for their children.

I wish I could say I did. However, my mother never read to us, and I followed in her footsteps for reading to my kids, though I know I did on occasion because they always had books. I've been a reader all my life, so was my husband, so they saw us with books and were readers too.

That's awesome that you and your husband set a good example and turned things around in the book/reading department.

@kareng Yes, even though we didn't read to them, they read. I know my daughter read to her kids and grandchildren.

Our son, who is a young man himself, loves to read. He was reading sentences at the age of 4 and the school advised us it was as a result of us reading to him his entire life. We started reading to my tummy before he was born.

I don't have any children; but I devoured books from a young age. I wish more children today would love books.

My parents read to us (my sisters and I) I read to my kids. But once they were old enough that I could read fun stuff then it got interesting!

@DocAnderson I firmly believe it is all a part of good parenting. It's also fun and a great way to spend time with your child/children. Kudo's to you.
