This photo of a duck reminds me of Lucky, the pet duck we had as kids. Lucky was a white Pekin duck and we found she was female when she started providing eggs.
She came to us as a newly hatched baby. She fell out of a truck passing our house. She bounced out while I was standing there and ran right into my hands. It was fate that she be my pet.
Shortly after, we moved to a mining town in the country. Lucky loved it there and soon had all the other animals in line. They did not mess with her.
She went swimming in cow watering troughs and was a happy duck.
I don't know what happened to her in the end and my brother does not remember either. I will always remember Lucky and the joy she gave to our family.
Did you ever get a pet in an unusual way? Or did they just "follow" you home?

I am a photographer lucky enough to be based in the beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa. My interest in photography started with Wildlife Photography...

This was long ago. Ducks don't live as long as people. I don't know what happened to her and neither do my siblings. I loved that duck. Sound crazy?
Could you keep a cat if you had the chance? I remember that you discussed a cat with some kittens but my memory is a little fuzzy. Maybe you could keep a pet in a cage, something like a hamster or gerbil.

@akalinus In 2014 one morning we heard shrill shrieks of kites and looked up to find two kites fighting. The next minute one of them dived into our backyard. It was injured. My elder brother applied an ointment on its wounds . It remained in our house for a week and then flew away..I don't think it was our pet.

@crazyhorseladycx She was one spoiled duck. She loved it in the country. I don't remember what happened to her. Maybe she flew away with migrating ducks. I really don't know.

A box turtle wandered into the yard when I was a kid. Kept it for many years until a dog killed it.

Rascal was an abused stray whose family abandoned him and never took him back in their home. My older son found him and asked for a towel. When I found out it was a dog he wanted the towel for because it was raining and he was muddy, I picked him up in my arms and took him into the bathtub. He was mine and I had him for 14 years. He got his name because he was acting like a rascal.
