Lucky the Duck

This photo of a duck reminds me of Lucky, the pet duck we had as kids. Lucky was a white Pekin duck and we found she was female when she started providing eggs. She came to us as a newly hatched baby. She fell out of a truck passing our house. She bounced out while I was standing there and ran right into my hands. It was fate that she be my pet. Shortly after, we moved to a mining town in the country. Lucky loved it there and soon had all the other animals in line. They did not mess with her. She went swimming in cow watering troughs and was a happy duck. I don't know what happened to her in the end and my brother does not remember either. I will always remember Lucky and the joy she gave to our family. Did you ever get a pet in an unusual way? Or did they just "follow" you home? Image by <a href=" van der Meulen from Pixabay
I am a photographer lucky enough to be based in the beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa. My interest in photography started with Wildlife Photography...

@akalinus Lucky sounds like she added a lot to your life. I hope she is ok wherever she is. I fed stray cats and one of them used to walk me to my door of the building but never wanted to come in.

This was long ago. Ducks don't live as long as people. I don't know what happened to her and neither do my siblings. I loved that duck. Sound crazy? Could you keep a cat if you had the chance? I remember that you discussed a cat with some kittens but my memory is a little fuzzy. Maybe you could keep a pet in a cage, something like a hamster or gerbil.

@Hannihar She is pretty. I can see that you take good care of her. You have a vet that comes to your house? I never had that.

@akalinus Yes, someone I know has the vet and I asked about her and contacted her and she is now Sophie's vet too. Thank you for your nice compliment.

@akalinus In 2014 one morning we heard shrill shrieks of kites and looked up to find two kites fighting. The next minute one of them dived into our backyard. It was injured. My elder brother applied an ointment on its wounds . It remained in our house for a week and then flew away..I don't think it was our pet.

Wow, that is awesome that you nursed it back to health and let it go back to the wild. I like that a lot.

@crazyhorseladycx She was one spoiled duck. She loved it in the country. I don't remember what happened to her. Maybe she flew away with migrating ducks. I really don't know.

Yes, you do. Who would think that a duck could get people to love it? And all the woodland critters also.

A box turtle wandered into the yard when I was a kid. Kept it for many years until a dog killed it.

They are so handy to have as pets in a garden, especially. I think they keep the bug population down.

Once a massive flood occurred in our neighbourhood when I was a kid, and then some crabs got into my house. I kept them as pets but can't remember what happened to them.

That's wild. You kept crabs that came in with a flood? I heard that crabs can make good pets. It is strange how we don't remember what happened to pets we loved.

How cute. We had frogs and turtles and all kinds of animals like that growing up.

We had different things like turtles and sometimes birds as well as cats and dogs. The duck came to us in such a strange way that it had to be its and our destiny to be together.

Rascal was an abused stray whose family abandoned him and never took him back in their home. My older son found him and asked for a towel. When I found out it was a dog he wanted the towel for because it was raining and he was muddy, I picked him up in my arms and took him into the bathtub. He was mine and I had him for 14 years. He got his name because he was acting like a rascal.

@just4him Border collies are wonderful animals. I never had one of those, though. We mostly had Heinz 57 dogs, a flavor of everything.
