Are Memory Lapses Just an Older Age Thing?

We've all seen the memes about "Senior moments". Most of us have had the experience of walking into a room and forgetting what we went in there for. I'm age 56. For a long time now, I've joked that my forgetful times are Senior moments. But really, I've had many other blank brain times through the years. It's happened more often during times of high stress, high hormones, depression. Of course, those things can occur during all ages and stages of life. When we feel unable to focus and/or remember things, it's probably a case of "brain overload" and sometimes being emotionally overwhelmed too. Does my theory make sense to you? Under what circumstances has your brain given you the silent treatment?

I seem to be having a harder time to remember words in different languages.

It seems to happen at random times. But I do walk into the kitchen or bathroom, get distracted by "something else," and forget to do what I went in there for.

I do that a lot. Although I haven't been officially diagnosed, I sometimes wonder if I have some form of Attention Deficit Disorder!

It sounds good to me. Better than a senior momernt or a brain fart.

@BloggerDi That is me. I had every intention to go into the room for something and then forgot what it was so had to think about it. I have forgotten things many times but that is not alzheimers. It is just forgetfulness. I am a senior. I have 68 going on 69. I agree it happens for all ages and stress does not help.

@BloggerDi You are welcome and I can see why you would forget if someone interrupts in in the middle of what you are saying or buts in to what you are saying.

Thanks for sharing you experience @Hannihar. One of my recent problems is about speaking. If I get interrupted while talking, I often forget what I was saying. It takes me awhile to remember it.

I think it’s quite normal in the western world, especially as we’re dealing with sensory overload on a daily basis.

I have always been forgetful. I just don't focus on certain things at the right moment. For example, at a big mall I used to make no memory of where I parked my car! When it came time to leave I wouldn't even know which exit to head to. My daughter's trained themselves to remember after a few hunting sessions. Now that they are grown, I have finally trained myself to notice where I park. So, once the crutch (daughters) was gone, my memory did work after all. I could say my memory improved with age.

I've had memory lapses but no serious cognitive impairment. At 65 I try to keep my mind sharp and maintain a healthy (I hope) body. Physical and mental activities are important but keeping a positive mindset completes the package.
