Ten TV Series That “Everybody” Watched Except Me: The Cosby Show (#9)

I’m continuing a look at those classic television series throughout recent decades (well, since the 70s) that were massive hits, Nielsen ratings winners, and favorites in millions of households....but I never watched them. For today’s show, you might say I knew something others didn’t? Not really. Here’s today’s classic series.
#9: The Cosby Show
In the 80s they called Thursday night on NBC “must-see TV.” I don’t know why other networks didn’t just broadcast the test pattern, because they knew they weren’t going to get anything to go up against the behemoth line-up on NBC on Thursday night.
While I did gleefully watch the last two hours of “must-see TV” on Thursday, I skipped the first hour, which was anchored by The Cosby Show.
One of the highest-rated TV series of the 80s. One of the most influential series of the 80s. And I never watched it.
Why? Well, Brothers was on Showtime one year on Thursday night, and I preferred it. But, truth be told, I cannot stand to watch Bill Cosby. That goes all the way back to The Electric Company (where he appeared in the first year as part of his doctrinal studies on education). (I vaguely remember him in I Spy, because we didn’t watch that series very much when I was little.)
I thought the guy’s comedy albums were very funny. But his mannerisms? NO. To me, he always looked like he’d just sucked on a sour persimmon and chased it with a lemon. So to force myself to sit and watch him do that sour persimmon with a lemon chaser face for 30 minutes a week simply didn’t appeal to me.

I did watch that show. Because I liked it, it just shocked me about what happened with Bill Cosby.
