What if it all Disappeared?

During the weekend, there was a mysterious outage that affected Google. There was trouble on Youtube and GMail. Also, a lot of smart appliances were also affected. People could not turn on their heat or AC. They could not unlock their doors or monitor their babies. Google did discover the trouble and fixed it. What if all technology disappeared? What if there was a war in space and all satellites were disabled or destroyed? What if our government or some other government turned it all off? That is why it is important to keep books, learn to write, learn how to do maths, and learn many of the other skills that are almost lost arts now. What would you do if it happened, you turned on your phone or laptop and nothing was there?

There was life before the Internet and this was not so long ago. The old ones remember it. We would return to this stage in the development of humankind.

Yes, there was life before the internet and the cell phone. The thing I would miss the most is the ease of writing online. It is so much easier to correct and change. You don't have to be consulting ancient volumes to do research. Card catalogs used to be the way to go. I remember the days of crumpled pages, carbon paper (how I hated it), smeary erasures and the miseries of producing manuscripts. I sold much more in those days.

@akalinus You can also be in close contact with people if you write letters. Most people have forgotten about this.

@MALUSE I don't do it anymore. I do write notes in cards for Christmas. I keep up with most people on FB. I once wrote long letters.

We have to know that we can adjust to a new reality and still earn and live. We would have to have relationships with friends in person. not online.

It must have a localized problem as I didn't have any problem here. It does show that anything is possible.

They fixed it pretty quickly. There is always a panic anytime that youtube goes missing.

I actually often wish this would happen as I hate the way this world has been going because of technology (good things, bad things, right?). It would be such a wake up call for so many. Maybe we can survive it . . . because we came from a time when we could be resourceful without it. But I don't know about the younger generations . . . they've had this practically all their lives!!

That is who I worry about, the younger generation. I know how to get along using my wits and prior knowledge. I would be okay even if I did not like it much. I hope the newer generations would learn to adjust.

@much2say They might have to actually learn to talk to their friends and others. They might have to pull their faces out of their phones and see what else there is in the world.

My biggest pet peeve - schools teaching kids how to research on the internet but no other way. I've been arguing for years that, if the internet were to disappear, there would be a whole generation that is completely lost.

You are so right. Kids would have no idea how to do their homework, even. They would be lost.

It would be awful. No one would know what to do with themselves..businesses would crash etc.

Well, if it goes away we will all go back to the natural way of doing things which for me is fine but for sure the younger ones will have a hard time dealing with

Since they never experienced it before, they might find that they like being freed from technology.

The scenario you painted is a scary one, but unfortunately an all-too-real one. I think it's only a matter of time before some enemy nation or rogue terrorist group figures out how to destroy our satellites, or block our internet, or even shut down our electrical grid. When that happens, it will be like we're thrown back into the dark ages. It will be a scary time for us since we rely so heavily on technology.

You bet it will be scary. Would we be better off? It is hard to tell.

@moffittjc I would miss a lot too. Every day when I get up, I check the news online. Every night, I play soothing music to help me sleep. I would miss technology.

@akalinus There's no doubt we've become too dependent on technology. Maybe it wouldn't be an entirely bad thing if we return to those pre-technology days. Although there are a lot of wonderful things about technology that I'd miss.

I didn't know there was a problem this weekend. I think I would panic first and then look for the solution. It's a good thing I know all those lost arts.

I don't have much smart technology. I open and close the door myself and the fridge only looks smart if there is something in it, which I control also.

@just4him I do too. I wonder if a smart refrigerator would tell you that there is a mold creature growing in that Tupperware dish or plastic wrap. What does a smart fridge do?

@akalinus You are absolutely right. I really miss those snail-mail pal days where people are more sincere and not too absorbed about your dress size like when they make friends through the Internet..
